Instructions for Applying

Main Content

  1. Department Graduate Assistantship applications (pdf file) should be received by the Physics Department by February 15.
  2. If you are an international student, your application will not be considered without proof of English competency.  A TOEFL score of 500 (173 CBT or 61 iBT) is required for restricted enrollment or 550 (213 CBT or 80 iBT) for unrestricted enrollment.
  3. For your program of study you should choose one of two options: a terminal master's degree or Ph.D. degree. A bachelor's degree in physics (or equivalent degree) is a requirement for admission to both programs.
  4. An applicant for the Ph.D. degree must have taken the general GRE exams. It is strongly recommended that the applicant take the physics GRE exam as well. Please include a copy of your GRE report of scores with your application.
  5. You may, if you wish, indicate an interest in a particular research specialty.
  6. If you wish to be considered for a Graduate College Fellowship (available only for master's degree candidates), you should obtain those forms from the Graduate College. Graduate College Dissertation Fellowships are available to outstanding graduate students after completion of their core courses.
  7. In order to complete your application for financial assistance, applications for admission to the University must be received by the Graduate College or International Services and Student Affairs by February 15.
